Oxbow Farm & Education Center - Helping Kids Learn Where Food Starts

April 10, 2014

Oxbow Organic Farm & Education Center is one of those special places in the Snoqualmie Valley.  It’s a small farm with a big heart.  Since its start in 1999, Oxbow strives to restore and preserve its 25-acre property, practice organic farming, and educate young and old about healthy food and the environment.

Their education programs are a unique offering and set Oxbow apart from many valley farms. The Oxbow Kids Club program is one such program, and it starts next month! The Oxbow Kids Club is a chance for kids age 6-12 to explore the on-site children’s garden and take a pumpkin from seedling to harvest. During the 6 Saturdays throughout the summer and early fall, kids will water and nurture their seedlings, play at the farm, take part in scavenger hunts and celebrate at a private harvest party with their families, all while learning about food, farm and forest life.

Oxbow Kids Club meets the 2nd Saturday of the month from May – October  from 10am-noon and the cost is $105 per child (siblings 10% off), which includes a t-shirt and pumpkin. Membership is limited to 25 children, so contact education@oxbow.org today!  Find out more about Kids Club, Summer Camps and other programs offered throughout the school year at http://www.oxbow.org/education/.

And be sure to mark your calendars for the upcoming Spring SowDown! This year’s educational theme is “This is where your food starts!”  Spring time is a great time to visit the farm and see where and how your food begins its long journey to your plate. The Spring SowDown takes place on Sunday, May 4th from 10am – 2pm at the farm and there will be tons of fun activities and educational booths for the entire family.  Here’s just a sample:

·         Join in an Ethnobotany walk or learn about honey bees

·         Fairy house-building and flower crown making

·         Chef & Father cooking throw down!

·         Sunflower seed planting and popcorn popping

·         Maypole at 1pm and music all day long

·         Pet spring baby bunnies, chicks and lambs with the FFA!

·         Veggie starts, natives, and other plants for sale

·         Food trucks

Tickets are $5 in advance or $7 at the gate.  Learn more about this fantastic event and purchase tickets here.

Oxbow also offers a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program, bringing your family the freshest, tastiest organic produce all grown right on their farm!  A CSA share runs for 20 weeks from June to October. A small OxBox is $420 and is perfect for 2-3 people; the large OxBox will generously feed a family of 4 and is $630 for the season. Find out more or sign up for a CSA share here.

Oxbow Organic Farm & Education Center is a wonderful place to reconnect with the land and community.  Come explore, plant, learn, celebrate and be inspired at one of the many events and activities at the farm this summer.
