Everett’s Jetty Island is a fun and affordable summer outing – and very popular! I’ve put together some information about Jetty Island and 5 tips to make your day frustration-free.
Jetty Island opened for the season on July 5th and the passenger ferry will continue to run through September 1st to this 2-mile sandy island in the sun. The ferry departs 7 days a week from the Jetty Landing and Boat Launch at 10th and W. Marine View Dr. in Everett. All children 12 and younger must be accompanied by a parent. There are no lifeguards at Jetty Island, so swimming is only allowed on the west shore at your own risk.
Tip 1: Make a reservation
Hot sunny days can see ferry wait times of 1-2 hours, so plan ahead. Reservations must be made at least 48 hours in advance by calling 425-257-8304 (Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm). The only catch is that non-Everett residents must have a minimum of 8 people in their party to reserve space, and be sure to allow time when you arrive to find and pay for parking and pick up your tickets.
Tip 2: Try going off-peak
Weekday visitors tend to go in the morning and leave early afternoon, so try heading over in the late afternoon and stay into the evening. On the weekends, get there early and plan to stay for the day to avoid the mid-day rush. If there is a long line, try the standby line, which takes walk-ons on a first come, first serve basis – great if extra ferries are running or there is a reservation no-show. Or, try going on a cooler, overcast day. Visitors will be down and wildlife sightings will be up!
Tip 3: Bring a good beach bag
Plan to bring everything you need for the day – this includes water, food and beverages, as well as sunscreen, hats, shoes, towels, sand toys and a beach umbrella. There are no amenities on Jetty Island and the sand makes it near impossible to wheel a stroller or wagon, so prepare the kids to help carry their gear. Pack a change of clothes for the car ride home, too.
Tip 4: Check the program and class schedule
The Everett Parks & Rec Summer Guide has a full list of the programs and interpretive classes being offered at Jetty Island throughout the summer. This could be an opportunity to take in a fun program and bring some structure to your beach day. On the other hand, it could give the opportunity to plan for a day where there may be no scheduled activities (and hence, less crowded).
Tip 5: Make a backup plan
Even the best planning sometimes doesn’t work out. Maybe there is a weather closure, the island has reached capacity, or the ferry lines are just too long. Some nearby options Mukilteo Lighthouse Park or Silver Lake Park. Or check out the Macaroni Kid calendar for more ideas!
