Hike Report: Barclay Lake

A fun and easy hike for the whole family!

June 26, 2014

At just under 4.5 miles round trip and 225 feet of elevation gain, Barclay Lake is a great hike for the whole family.  My family set out for this hike on a dreary Saturday morning and we were pleasantly surprised by the beauty of this short hike.  Although the low clouds obscured our views of Baring Mountain and Merchant Peak once we reached the lake, there was still plenty to keep our attention.

From the small parking lot you quickly descend into a lovely, mature northwest forest - part of the Wild Sky Wilderness.  There are interesting logs and stumps begging for little legs to climb and explore them.  Barclay Creek parallels much of the trail, and there are some nice places to diverge from the main trail to wade in the creek or stop for a snack.  The lake itself is clear and (so I hear) on a sunny day is surrounded by gorgeous scenery.  Pick one of the many spots by the lake to enjoy lunch, and maybe take swim if the weather cooperates before heading back to the car.

This is also a popular trail for overnight trips, and we hiked with several families and scout troops planning to stay overnight in one of the campsites by the lake.  If you are a seasoned hiker and are looking for a little more adventure with your family, Barclay Lake could be a great overnight option.

Directions:

Head east on Highway 2 until you come to the small town of Baring. Near milepost 41 and across from the Der Baring Store, turn left (north) onto 635th Place NE. You will stay on this road just over a quarter mile and then turn onto Forest Road 6024.  (NOTE: books call out this road as 6034 and maps use 6024, so it can be a bit confusing – we followed a sign with an arrow saying “hike -->” and it took us to the right place!)  The forest road will dead end at the trailhead after about 4 miles, and there are some big potholes at the beginning, so take it slow, especially if you aren’t in a high clearance vehicle.

A Northwest Forest Pass is also required for this hike.
