Exploding Apples

A preschool science experiment

By Melinda Larke - Cherry Valley Macaroni Kid Publisher and Editor September 7, 2017

It is apple season!  It is also back to school season.  Combine the two and do a fun little science experiment that your kids will love.

Supplies Needed:

  •  Cored Apples
  • Baking Soda (amount doesn't matter)
  • Vinegar (amount doesn't matter)
  • Pie Dish
  • Apple Pie Spice (optional)
  • Food dye (optional)

The Experiment:

  • Place cored apple in pie dish
  • Pour baking soda into the middle of the apple
  • Mix in vinegar with baking soda in middle of apple
  • Observe the reaction of the baking soda and vinegar combined
  • Keep mixing as desired and the exploding can keep happening over and over again!
  • Optional - add in food dye to vinegar for colored fizz
  • Optional - add in apple pie spice to baking soda to create apple scented baking soda

Teach your kids that by combining the baking soda and vinegar you are creating carbon dioxide gas which is what is making the fizzing and erupting.  You can also do this with a pumpkin or quickly throw everything into a ziplock baggie and zip it up. See if you can get the bag to explode.
