Aladdin - Through the Eyes of a Nine Year Old

Review of Disney's Aladdin at The Parmount

By Melinda Larke - Cherry Valley Macaroni Kid Publisher and Editor October 15, 2017

She was adamant; she never liked the movie, never liked Princess Jasmine and therefore wouldn’t like Disney’s Aladdin. I told her she would love it, she didn’t know what she was talking about, and that she was going.

She saw the Paramount Theater sign all lit up and I heard an “eek.” She had been to plays before, but never at such a grand theater. Glitter, bright lights, vibrant colors, all part of her world. I could tell she was finally getting excited! She found our seats, sat down, and read the program from front to back. Then it started! There is nothing quite like a Disney live show, and if you have never seen one, go. They are spectacular from start to finish. Aladdin is no different.

Genie was her favorite by far. She loved his jokes. She loved that she could understand most of his jokes; when you are nine, many jokes go right over your head. She loved his big song and dance combo. It had the fabulous combination of the Genie and his humor, along with the great song, dance, and fanfare that Disney is known for. Fancy and flashy costumes, flashing lights, confetti popping out, and a little Disney magic sprinkled around; what nine year wouldn’t like that! Really though, this thirty-something year old thought it was pretty awesome also!

After intermission, she settled down a bit as the show settled down a bit. But she still was very silent (which is very unlike her) and interested in everything that was happening on that stage. Then the magic carpet came…OMG…she was in such wonderment! “How do they do that?” “Wow! That looks so cool!” “How did they do that?” “Look! Look at the moon!” Once again, Disney had performed its magic on my daughter. After the show was over, I asked her what she thought of the show – “It was cool and funny!” I would call that a success…

As the adult of the duo and the more biased one, I loved this show from start to finish! The sets, the costumes, the choreography, the songs (original and new), the actors, and the script were all fantastic! I really loved the humor that was brought into the show, it really kept you on your toes. While I do think it is a great musical for children, I don’t think it would be best for children under 8 years old. I don’t think they would understand the humor, understand the story, and there are some scenes that may be scary for the younger children.
