Down on Main Street in Duvall is Rustic Rose, a unique shop where you can find unique gifts, home decor, apparel, jewelry and more. It is the winner of the 2018 Cherry Valley Macaroni Kid Golden Daisy Awards in Best Gift Shop and it is owned by Mom Boss, Janelle Timm.
Tell me about your business. Why did you decide to start this business?
I started my business in April 2017. I started it because I wanted to work local and needed the flexibility to get my kids from school if they were sick or didn’t have childcare. I worked in the court and didn’t have any flexibility.
What was the hardest or scariest part of starting your business?
The hardest part was not knowing if I would be successful and putting in my everything to have it fail.
What did your family think in the beginning? What do they think now?
My kids are 6 and 8 and don’t really know what it takes. They do know that mom had a dream and that I’m going for it. When they do need to come to work with me, they are very helpful and love little jobs I give them.
Do you have any tips for women wanting to start their own business?
I would say do a lot a research. Have a business plan, start small, know the community and what it needs. Maybe that’s working and starting a small business on the side, then growing that business
Any tips for balancing the work/family life?
I try to set times where there is a kids day every week when we do something to make a memory. I try little times during the week where I can snuggle with them and talk to them about school. Some weeks are better then others, but I keep trying to improve.
What are you most proud of during your business journey so far?
I am most proud of going after something I wanted and making it work. I love meeting new customers and helping them find that special gift. I makes my proud that our store won runner up best of Duvall for customer service and best gift shop from the gold daisy awards.
What do you see for the future? Any plans you want to share with us?
I see in the future us moving to a new location on with a store front on Main St. This will be happening Aug 1st of this year. I cant wait to start remodeling the space and making it my own.
