Day Trippin' for Spring Break

By Melinda Larke - Cherry Valley Macaroni Kid March 28, 2019

Spring break is here! Don't have any plans?  How about a day trip? Here are some places in the Washington State area that would make a great day trip for the whole family this Spring Break!

Skagit Valley
Go tiptoeing in the tulip fields this year from April 1-30.  Both RoozenGarde and Tulip Town will be open for your tulip viewing pleasure.  Admission is only $7.00 on weekdays and kids 5 and under are free!
Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy amongst the fields or buy some snacks/lunch while you are there.

Tips -
  • Bring your rain gear, it can be very muddy in the fields.
  • Bring a change of clothes, once again muddy.
  • Cash always works best.
  • Go on a weekday to avoid crowds and get cheaper admission.

Time to destination - 1 hour

Roslyn -
Head up over the pass and visit Roslyn, a small town with a famous past.  Used as the backdrop of the hit TV show Northern Exposure in the 90's, you can still walk the town and see the buildings the way they were during the series running.  While that is fun to see, you don't have to be a Northern Exposure fan to have a good time in Roslyn.  Head up there for the day, check out the shops up and down 1st street, have lunch at The Brick; the oldest  continuously running saloon in Washington (yes, they are family friendly), and stop by Fused and make your own glass masterpiece! From June 9th - September 8th, the Roslyn Summer Market runs every Sunday from 10-2.

Tip -
  • Check the weather and traffic on Snoqualmie Pass before you go.

Time to destination - 1 hour 45 minutes

Olympic Peninsula/Port Townsend -
Just a short ferry ride away from the Edmonds ferry terminal, the Olympic Peninsula has so much fun to offer your family.  Start your day in Port Townsend , walking the beaches, playing at some of the great playgrounds in the town, and checking out some of the great shops the town has to offer.  My kids love the candy and ice cream shops the best, no surprise there.  Then, head on over to Fort Worden Historical State Park to learn the history of the area.  Or, drive up to the Olympic Game Farm in Sequim and experience wild like up close and personal.

Tips -

Time to destination - 2 hours 30 minutes

Deception Pass State Park -
Want to spend some time at the beach?  Hear the waves crashing around you? Feel the sand between your toes?  Let the water heal your soul?  Deception Pass State Park is the place to go.  You can also take a hike, go fishing, and in the warm summer months not only play in the ocean, but splash and swim at nearby Cranberry Lake.

Tips -
  • You must pay for parking at an automated pay station at the park or have a Discover Pass.
  • Don't forget to check out the Deception Pass bridge while you are there

Time to destination - 1 hour 15 minutes

Friday Harbor -
Enjoy the true wonder of the waters of the Puget Sound by taking a ferry ride to the San Juan Islands.  It is a longer day trip but completely worth it!  Friday Harbor is the gateway to the San Juan Islands and the biggest of the towns.  Friday Harbor is a great walkable town with several family friendly options.  Visit The Whale Museum and  learn all about whales and the whales of the Pacific Northwest.   If you have a car, head over to Lime Kiln Point State Park, for some hiking, beautiful views, and if you are lucky, you may see some whales passing by.

Tips -
  • Ferry reservations are recommended for the Anacortes Ferry to the San Juan Islands.
  • Save some money by leaving your car at the Anacortes Ferry terminal and walking on the ferry. Friday Harbor is a very walkable town.
